In 2001, September 8th, near the peak of Monte Rotondo, a statue dedicated to “Our Lady of Snow” was erected.

On this recurrence, every year and on the first Sunday of September, the Management of Società Campo Felice opens its facilities to reach the peak of Monte Rotondo and so to allow people to attend Church service in honour of Our Lady of Snow.

At the presence of His Eminence the Cardinal Fiorenzo Angelini, of His Eminence Monsignor Giuseppe Molinari, Archbishop of the diocese of L’Aquila, of civil and military authorities and of many people coming from the territory and from the small towns of the district of L’Aquila, the Carrara-marbled statue was unveiled: it was 7 metres high and weighed about 25 tons.

Over there, at a height of 1,931 metres above sea-level, the work made by the sculptor Silvio Amelio is suspended between Heaven and Earth and watches over Campo Felice, Rocca di Cambio and the Altopiano delle Rocche.

The autographed telegram of His Holiness John Paul the Second was very cheered, expressing his spiritual participation to the event since he was mindful of the hearty welcome he had received many times in these places.

The Catholic newspaper “L’Osservatore Romano”, in its edition dated 10.09.01, dedicated an entire page to that exceptional event, also accompanying it with many photos.

At the foot of the statue, an artistic memorial tablet reports the following dedication:

(English translation: “Among the mountains / narrating the glory / of God, / seeing many times / as an admired pilgrim / John Paul the Second, / Our Lady of Snow / may be an everlasting call / to the spiritual values”).

On that occasion, the Metropolitan Archbishop of L’Aquila, His Eminence Giuseppe Molinari addressed his “huge thanks to Mr. Aldo Jacovitti, Cavaliere del Lavoro as well as a man deeply in love with his place of origin, who strongly wished this work and then he carried it out successfully with his wonted generosity. Such a work is worthy of the highest admiration for his noble human and mostly religious value”.
